OWEN'S
HISTORY
The
buildings have been in the hands of the Owen family since the 1870's,
built by John Blakemore for £1000. In the early days Owens dealt in straw,
horse feed, groceries, and wholesale fruit. At the turn of the century,
the two sons divided the business, and Charles came down Market St and
carried on the grocery business, whilst William stayed at the premises
and dealt in newspapers and cycles. He started dealing in cars, had a
charabanc business running excursions, and had a taxi business. In the
1960's, Brian Owen started to deal in radio and TV.

in Oakengates, and was brought by train (GWR) from London. They
couldn't start it, so it was towed by horse and cart down Oxford St, and
up Market St. The make was probably a Daimler.
