THE CHARLTON MOUND

Charlton Mound 1.jpg (26897 bytes)

A 200,000 ton pit-mound namely the "Charlton Mound" ("otherwise referred to as a miniature wrekin") was the biggest of 200 similar disfigurements near Oakengates, and work started on 14th July, 1933 to remove it. Fourteen members started work from the International Voluntary Service with their leader Dr. Pierre Ceresole, son of a former President of The Swiss Republic along with men from various countries, including England and Wales. Originally, the Mound was given to the Mound Committee by the Wrekin Brewery Company, for the purpose of levelling for public sites, "bus terminus and car park". The International Voluntary Service for Peace offered its services in order that this objective might be accomplished.
