The Oakengates Wakes were held in the first week
of September, on Owens field, behind the Grosvenor Cinema. The Eastern Primary road now
runs over this spot. Roundabouts, coconut shies, shooting galleries, lady teasers (water
pistols), boxing, lions, dwarves, giants, and all the usual side shows were there. People
would walk from Shifnal to go to the Wakes, and it was a prime courting event. The carts
needed up to 100 horses to pull them, and would be grazed on a field on Ketley Bank. One
of the main attractions was Twigdon's Theatre.
