Trench digging - this photo was taken in Hong Kong shortly before the KSLI were ordered to Korea. Jeffrey Murphy (left) is pictured with Montague Ritterband, both NCOs. When in the trenches in Korea, their officer was sent away for three days leave in Tokyo. He told the two friends to man his dugout whilst he was absent. There was only room for one, so they tossed a coin. Corporal Ritterband won the toss, and moved into the officer's dugout, where he was killed as he walked through the door by a direct hit from a Chinese shell.
