This is a reply to Iain Thompson about Dark Lane. My Great Great Grandparents lived in Dark Lane. All I know about it is it was a little hamlet of about 60 cottages in 3 rows, 2 formed an angle. there was also a chapel, a railway station and farm.
The chapel was built in 1865 by Thomas Tart and William Withington it was demolished as was Dark Lane to build Telford New town. In the 1881 census it states that Nos. 44-48,50,51,53-55 Dark lane were uninhabited.
Hope this is of interest.

Hi everyone in Oakengates.
I was just looking in your site to look for the whereabouts of Johnny Hancocks ex Wolves legend, who was born and died in Oakengates.
I went through every detail in the site and I really liked the place. I have travelled to England on many occasions. I have also been to Wolverhampton and Birmingham, but I've never been to Oakengates. But I can assure you that if my next trip is in the U.K. I will definately make a visit to the beautiful town of Oakengates.

Hi, I came across the site while looking into my family history. My grandmother lived at 'Oakdene' Leonard Street, Oakengates and I have a copy of her baptism certificate when she was baptised on June 9th 1912 by her father, Thomas Smith, a deacon at Oakengates Baptist Church. I do not have a house number for 'Oakdene' and wondered if anyone knows of the house.

Hello, I have just discovered your site through trying to researach my family tree. My great grandfather Edwin Gilbert Golding, is listed on the 1901 census as living at 13 Market Street Wombridge parish. He was a drapers assistant, 26. The head of the household was a Miss Lizzie Watkins. Although married at the time there is no mention of my great grandmother, Mary Louise Golding. Later the family lived in Shifnal and they and my grandfather, Randal Golding who died during WW2, are buried at St Andrews church there.
If anyone has any information about the drapers, Lizzie Watkins or anyone in my family I would be very grateful.
Thank you,
Christine

Hi, I lived in and around Oakengates from 1942 to 1964 when I joined the RAF. I retired from the service in 1995 and now live in Berkshire. During my growing up years in Oakengates, my parents Vi and Les kept the Greyhound Inn on the Holyhead Road. When I left the area, I lost touch with many old friends. If you remember me I hope you are all fit and well. Good Luck Oakengates.

Hi, as a girl I lived in West Road, Ketley Bank and attended Queenswood school. My name back then was Lisa Jones my father Harry, mother Janet and younger brother Adrian. We later moved to the Homelands, Mobile Home Park where my mother still lives. I have very fond memories of Ketley Bank and Oakengates, Mrs Hedges' sweet shop and butchers, the old chapel and playing on the gorse (as we called it). I am presently researching my mothers side of the family Stevens or Stephens who appear to have lived around Donnington/Lilleshall for at least 200 years, if anyone has info on this family or would just like to reminisce over times spent at Ketley Bank please feel free to contact me.

As a relatively newcomer to Oakengates, and having looked at the History of the general area - including some pictorial books, showing its past industrial sites - I have become fascinated with the local history below our feet. Sadly, a lot of the former buidings have disappeared, but others lurk only around the corner!

Is there a Civic Society for Oakengates and St Georges, along with the general area? If not,it would be quite something to have others, who have the same fascination with the industrial and social history of this fascinating area, to consider forming a Civic Society for this area. I, for one, would certainly like to be included or help to establish one that could meet at frequent intervals. I do know that other nearby Towns, such as Wellington, Ketley and Shifnal have such organisations.

Please feel free to e-mail with any comments, or otherwise.

I was born at 82 Jubilee Ave, Donnington in 1941, and attended St. Patrick's RC School in Wellington - then on to Adams Grammar at Newport. I have just found the Oakengates site, which is great, and was surprised to see my name in Peter Wood's email dating back to 2002. I note that many of the subscribers are tracing their family history as I am. I have joined the Shropshire Family History Society and find it extremely helpful. My mother's family (Hick/Brothwood/Bould/Gaut/Lawley) were miners in Donnington and I've traced them back to the 1700s.

Ed's note - try the BBC family history website as well

I have recently visited Snedshill following the fire at the trading estate on Christmas eve, when a number of buildings were destroyed. Is there anyone still around who worked at the Snedshill brickworks site before it closed in 1966? I would be interested to speak to someone who could tell me about the different buildings on the site and how the products moved through the site from raw materials to finished products.

I enjoyed a visit to Oakengates and to the fine church and the shopping centre. I hope to return to the area more often

Hi all. I've lived in Oakengates/Ketley Bank/St Georges all my life and proud to come from here. Nearly all members of my family come from the Telford area.

I'm looking for any information you anyone might have regarding my family.

My dad is Andrew Nock. He attended Wombridge CP School and then the local secondary. My aunt is Helen Burroughs (nee Nock). My grandparents are Leonard 'Roy' Nock and Barbara Nock (nee Roberts). They still live in Oakengates and used to live in Beverley many years ago. It was their house on Willows Road that had the gas explosion in the late 60s/early 70s.

On the other side of the family, my mother's name is Carol Nock (nee Picken). She unfortunately died 7 years ago. She was brought up in Hadley and Wellington. Her siblings are Amanda (Mandy), Julie, Ian and Keith. My grandparents are Frank Picken (recently deceased) and Doreen Picken (nee Moore).

If any of these names or events seem familiar, please email me and I will pass any messages on. Thanks

Hi, visited Oakengates recently to walk in the footsteps of ancestors. My Davies connection to the area goes back to early 1800's, also Evans, Bevan, all living in Oakengates, Wrockwardine Wood, Priors Lee, Wombridge Hill, Lawley Bank, but especially The Nabb, where there has been a lot of Davies connection between 1851 and 1891. I would love to hear from anyone with these names in their tree who think we may have a connection. Also can anyone hazard a guess as to why the Evans would move to Newfoundland early 1830's, have two children then return a few years later to Priors Lee, and have more family. The head of household was a coal labourer, so they would not have been well off. I would love to hear theories on why, how, and was this down to something happening in Shropshire at the time? Hope someone can give me ideas on this. Thanks

I have just found the Oakengates web site, Amazing. I now live in Spain but was born in Old Park
Oakengates was the place where my Mum did most of her shopping. My father Clive Upton was baths attendant at the Granville pit for many years. Sadly he died just before the pit was closed and was still employed by the NCB at that time.

He used to work double shifts and holidays --especially Christmas--always keen to earn a bit of extra cash. I remember him taking me into the baths one year - I must be one of the few women to have been inside a pit head baths house ! I think I have still got some of the towels he bought for me from the shop - they are indestructible and of excellent quality.

Trying to trace anyone who attended the John Hunt School in the year 1957 form 4. I would like to find anyone who attended at that time to exchange any news.

Kind regards,
Pete (Parky).

Hi everyone, I grew up in trench and still live in Telford. I love the history section of the site as I am trying to trace my family history.
Most of it is out of Telford but I do have a couple of people from the area. My uncle's family "Gale" were from the Horton area and also "Tranter" family again from Horton, haven't got much further back with the Tranters at the moment, apart from a John Tranter born 1873 in Horton Donnington. I have looked in 1881 census but there are two of them!

Does anyone know what happened to the Uxacona Singers? I was a founder member in c. 1963 but left Oakengates in 1968 and then went overseas in 1969, so rather lost touch. All the people I should have asked aren't around any more unfortunately. I was talking to someone about Oakengates recently and wondered what happened to this choir especially as I found an LP of them (after my time c.1970).
