My connection to Oakengates is that some of my ancestors are buried at the cemetery there. My great-great-great-great-grandmother Mary Barnsley (nee Davies) was buried in Oakengates in 1862 aged 98. Her husband John Barnsley was born in Shifnal in 1769 and christened in Wellington. They had seven children, including my great-great-great-grandfather James in 1797. James, with wife Ann (nee Phillips), lived in the Wellington/Wombridge area in the early 1800's; he and many of his sons were bricklayers. In the mid 1800's they lived at Oakengates, then Sump Lane and later New Road in Wombridge. They had eight children, including my great-great-grandfather John, born in Wrockwardine in 1827. John's wife Ciceley (nee Williams) was born in Wombridge in 1831 and died at Shifnal in 1897. They had nine children, born between 1852 and 1876: Emily, Hannah, Henry, Sarah Ann, William (my great-grandfather), James, Elizabeth, Mary Jane, and John. The last five children were born in Shifnal; the others in Wombridge. I would love to hear from anyone with a connection to any of these families.

I enjoyed your site, and would like to thank you for allowing me to find more about my ancestors and some of the businesses in which they were involved. I have been to see Lilleshall when I was staying in Staffordshire in 1998 and of all the 'Ancestral Homes' it was so pleasing to see that it was kept in such good condition, and it was pleasant to walk around the garden. I often wonder what the 5th Duke was thinking when he sold it, for this was the original home of the Leveson-Gower side of the family, (he probably wanted a holiday in Canada during the 2nd World War!) Anyway, again many thanks.

Good day to all. I was born in Ketley in 1944, and I have lived in Australia since 1972. I returned to Shropshire for a brief holiday in November last year to catch up with my mother and family. My sister Sheila works at the doctor's surgery in Oakengates. Nice website - I will visit again.

My 'Dawes' and 'Ball' ancestors are from Snedshill, and I was wondering if there is anyone out there, especially from the area of Birmingham/Walsall who is familiar with any descendants of the musician, Emmanuel Ball b 1856, Shropshire, and his wife Mary Ellen (Lillie) from Middlesex, who could contact me with information and/or photographs of these Ball descendants? Their children were: Julie Roberta Ball b. 1880 who studied 'dispensing', Gertrude Ball b. 1882 who was a milliner, Alice Ball b. 1883, teacher at a 'board school', Dorothy Ball b. 1885, and her twin, Eddie Ball b. 1885 who studied electrical engineering, and Selwyn Ball b. 1887. We have one photo, taken in 1919, of Eddie Ball and his daughter, Nanette b. about 1917, possibly taken at Acock's Green (left). Emmanuel Ball was the uncle of my grandfather, William Robert Dawes of Shropshire, who came to Texas in 1889. Thanks, and good hunting to all family historians out there!

My connection to Oakengates and in particular Trench is that in about 1971(ish) to 1973(ish), my family lived on Park Road (I think it was number 57). My father Dennis Thompson used to work at MOD Donnington. If I remember rightly he was a welfare officer there, he was also a lay reader at St Matthews church Donnington, and I can remember the vicar's first name was Horace (Jervis or Jarvis) I think it was, he had a son called Roland (I think), I myself went to Trench Boys Secondary Modern School, and was in the Sea Cadets, (TS Wrekin) and reached AB in rank there, I can only remember one or two of the teachers at the school at the time, we had Kocosca (I think thats how it was spelt, Koko was his nickname), Bertie Hughes TD (er the boys in 2B2, "in a welsh accent,) Hector Heath, Bumbasher Bayliss, I think the RE teacher was a Mr Hewitt. I used to do Fishing and Archery for my games lessons with I think it was the caretaker, we made a fishing rod out of tank aerials and used to go fishing near Trench Pool. The Sea Cadets at that time had a 'Lifeboat' from SS Ascamius on Trench Pool, I went on two or three courses with the Sea Cadets, Culdrose, Helston and Lossiemouth, any one remember me or these times, one event with the Sea Cadets that sticks out in my mind was once when we were returning from a course on the train, one cadet on the train stole some cigs from the buffet car, they ended up being slung out the train windows when the ticket inspector came down the train. Anyone remember those halcyon days? If you do please get back to me, also another thing that has just sprung to mind school composed a book called, (i think it was) Trench Poets written by pupils at the school, (would love to get hold of a copy) I seem to remember it having I think a red cover. If any of this makes sense, or if you can remember any of this then please get back to me. Maybe some of the old cadets of that time could get in touch.

Hi, My grandparents were married in Oakengates and lived at 21 Church Street, Oakengates, when my mother was born. My mother was Gladys Ball and she was born in 1914 and her mother was Elizabeth Gregory and her father was James Ball. They were married in early 1914. My grandfather's father was a Thomas Ball. I never learnt much from my mother who died very young. Just thought maybe someone might know something and can email me with some information. Thanks

Hi, Can anyone out there help with some information please. In August 2003 we escaped from the West Midlands to Oakengates and purchased one of the old terraced cottages in Leonard Street, after 12 months of hard work, putting it back to a "proper cottage" I have been told by a medium, that we have made our resident spirit feel much happier! (he's known by the name of Sid and is quite friendly really). Not knowing much about the Oakengates area, can someone tell me the name of the factory that used to stand to the rear of our properties, what was it's name?, and what did they make? when was it demolished? I can see that it was there for a long time by the maps on the Oakengates web page, and the fact that I can't grow much in my rear garden due to the poor soil. Lastly, if anyone has any information on people who lived in Leonard Street, (Sid possibly?!) I loved to hear from you It's been a pleasure living here for the last 12 months, Shropshire people are so friendly Many thanks

Does anyone remember a family who lived in Oakengates called TROOP?? I'm trying to find anyone who would known John Troop....or his wife Amelia...or their daughter Mary Amelia. They all lived at 98 The Nabb.....John worked as a rolling stock manager he died in 23rd Feb 1941 and his wife Amelia died one month before him. Its a really long story concerning John Troop......here's the shortened version.......John married in Liverpool Oct 1900....his first wife had a baby Nov 1900..now the baby was my husbands nanna.....and she said her father (John Troop) had left the Liverpool home to work in America but he was killed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.....sadly her mother died in 1911 and nanna was placed in an orphanage as there wasn't anyone to look after her. Nanna married and had children of her own and told them the story of America. Then about 4 years ago I got a computer and tried to find him in America - tried the Eliis Island site and there was nothing down for him. I eventually found him alive - well he was once and living in Oakengates .With another wife and daughter. They are both buried in Wrockwardine Wood graveyard. To make matters worse theres also a connection with BERRINGTON FARM......on Johns death cert it says that M.A JONES daughter present at the death Berrington Farm, Berrington.....Can anyone recall the Troops I just seem to be hitting brick walls I think it would be easier to find Lord Lucan than John Troop lol. Anything no matter how small I'd be very very grateful for ......Lainey Todd

My late Grandmother Charlotte Currier told me that she was born in Oakengates around 1895 but I have been unable to locate her birth certificate. The limited information I have is that her Father was a clergyman. The name Biddulph also is recalled. I know there were Curriers living in the area at the time and I wonder if any of their decendants still live in Oakengates and can provide some help in tracing my Grandmother's roots.
